Subtext Coffee Roasters

ABOUT SUBTEXT COFFEE ROASTERS

Subtext Coffee Roasters is a small team of coffee professionals roasting in one of the industrial hold-outs of Toronto, Canada. They aim to push the boundaries of coffee quality—not for some dilettante or aesthetic occupation, and not for ego or self-satisfaction. They work with the most inspiring and uncompromising coffee producers from around the world, and they believe that quality and sustainability are inextricable expressions of care, dignity, integrity, and humanity. Each of their coffees is named after the producer as to honour the people who worked the coffee before it was in Subtext’s hands. They deliberately eschew traditions that put broad regional names on labels, anonymizing where and who a coffee is from. For the brand, knowing exactly whose hands a coffee has gone through is the first step at building integrity into the coffee supply chain.

WORK

In an effort to become more sustainable and environmentally conscious, Subtext Coffee Roasters made the decision to switch to home compostable bags. Subsequently, they also took this bag renewal as an opportunity to refresh their packaging design.

Keeping in mind that this is a refresh and not an overhaul since they’ve already established themselves within the coffee community in Toronto, the challenge was to help them stand out on the shelves without changing the elements that people recognize Subtext for. The brand’s existing colour palette is quite neutral so to combat that, the only area where colour is used is on the bag’s name (the coffee producer) to further acknowledge and put the spotlight on the people behind the coffee beans. In addition, the secondary typeface was updated from Century Gothic to Object Sans to modernize the look.
